Low-cost carrier Ryanair has escalated its standoff with Spanish airport operator Aena, warning that further flight reductions could extend into next year unless operational charges are brought down.

CEO Eddie Wilson, speaking to El Economista, cautioned that Ryanair may axe additional routes by winter if Aena fails to lower what he described as excessive fees for underutilized airports. The airline has already announced plans to shut down operations in Jerez and Valladolid this summer and reduce services in Santiago de Compostela, Asturias, Cantabria, and Zaragoza.
Instead, Ryanair is redirecting capacity to more tourism-heavy hubs such as Madrid, Malaga, and Alicante, adding 1.5 million seats across these popular routes.
While airport charges in Spain have remained frozen since the pandemic, a 4.09% increase was introduced last year due to inflation. Wilson emphasized that Ryanair is not demanding special privileges but is calling for a fair pricing structure that supports regional airports and encourages route development through lower costs.
He proposed a risk-sharing model in which Aena offers reduced fees for three to four years on select routes, with the option to raise them once passenger demand has been proven.
